Here is a quick guide on what to look out for while purchasing a pre-owned car:

GET THE CAR CHECKED
Mr Christopher Tan, director of Autotrust Traders, says: “Choose a dealer that sends its pre-owned cars for rigorous checks.”

Autotrust Traders’ cars are inspected by STA. Such checks will reveal the vehicle’s condition, accident history and mileage.

Mr Raymond Tang, managing director of Yong Lee Seng Motor and first vice-president of the Singapore Vehicle Traders Association (SVTA), says pre-owned cars should be checked by third-party organisations like VICOM and STA.

Yong Lee Seng Motor’s cars are sent to VICOM for evaluation. After any faulty parts are replaced and repaired, the cars are then sent for another round of evaluation at VICOM before being sold.

Pay attention to how easy it is to handle the car during
the test drive.

MAKE THE RIGHT CHOICE
Instead of choosing the cheapest car, pick a trustworthy and reliable dealer, says Mr Tang.

The car is also likely to depreciate less if it is accident-free, says Mr Tan.

TAKE IT FOR A TEST DRIVE
Be sure to try out a car model that you like.

Mr Tang says: “The car must offer a comfortable drive. It should be easy and smooth to handle during the test drive.”

Mr Tan recommends paying attention to whether the steering wheel is wobbly or vibrating during the test drive, as well as if it is easy to change gears smoothly.

The engine should not be giving out strange or loud noises.

CONDUCT AN INSPECTION
Before committing to a purchase, it is best to check the car carefully.

Mr Tan says: “The interior of the car should be well-kept. Check that the dashboard is not cracked.

Refurbishing certain parts of the car will cost you more eventually.”

The condition of the car is the most important factor to consider, says Mr Tang.

“The car should look as if it has been well taken care of. Its dashboard and leather seats should be well maintained. The car’s mileage may not always be an accurate indication of its condition.”
