Planning to get a new ride especially with the next festive season round the corner? Preowned cars are an option to consider.Get the truth behind common misconceptions people have when buying a used car.Mr Raymond Tang, the first vice president of  Singapore Vehicle Traders Association (SVTA), helps you discern fact from fiction.

MYTH 1: THE MORE OWNERS A CAR HAS HAD, THE POORER ITS CONDITION.

A pre-owned car’s condition largely depends on how the carwas handled  by previous owners.Mr Tang said: “It is incorrect to assume that a car  which had only one previous owner is better than a car  which has changed hands several  times. If  the previous owners have  taken good care of the car and sent it for regular servicing and maintenance, it should be in good condition. When it comes to judging a car’s condition, focus less on the number of previous owners and look at the car evaluation report. The same applies for the age of a car.

MYTH 2: ODOMETERS CAN BE ROLLED BACK TO SHOW A LOWER MILEAGE.

This is not a myth. Odometer fraud does exist as the odometer can be tampered with.“To safeguard yourself from fraudulent dealings, it is best to buy from reputable car dealers that are awarded with the CaseTrust-SVTA accreditation. Choose a car that has gone through an inspection and evaluation from a legitimate inspection centre such as VICOM or STA. This gives you peace of  mind  knowing that the car  you bought is in the condition it is declared to be,” said Mr Tang.

MYTH 3: HOW IMPORTANT IS ITTO GET THE SERVICE RECORDOF THE CAR?

While it is good to check the service record of the car you are buying, what matters most is the condition it is documented to be in after the final inspection and evaluation. Mr Tang said: “The evaluation report from inspection centres such as VICOM and STA will tell you its condition. That is what you need to ultimately look at, as  it gives you an unbiased view of  the car’s current condition for you to base  your buying deci- sion on. ”Look out for more tips tomorrow on what to look out for when buying a pre-owned car.
